R.I. Gov. Raimondos proposal to legalize recreational marijuana greeted with caution

Rhode Island attorney general, House speaker and Senate president raise concerns on implementation, enforcement.

PROVIDENCE — The new attorney general and leaders of the General Assembly reacted with caution to Gov. Gina Raimondo’s proposal to legalize recreational marijuana.

Attorney General Peter Neronha said Sunday that the proposal will require strong regulations to protect public health and safety, and prevent children from accessing the drug.

“I think I understand where the governor is coming from,” Neronha said, noting that surrounding states have already moved to legalization. “I have some concerns with how it is implemented.”
