State lawmakers recently introduced legislation that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Illinois.

Bill sponsors said they want to hold hearings and gather feedback on the proposal but do not intend to seek a vote on the plan until next year.

On Monday, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute said 74 percent of voters “support or strongly support” decriminalizing marijuana, based on opinions of 1,000 registered voters who were polled March 4-11.
