In a tight vote Wednesday afternoon, Vermont state senators approved a measure to legalize recreational marijuana.
The vote took place just before 4 p.m. at the statehouse in Montpelier, Vermont
The bipartisan vote was 16-13.
The approval sets the stage for another political battle Thursday, when final approval was expected.
Those who oppose the measure were expected to add amendments to try to kill it altogether.
Opponents said the bill sends a terrible message to Vermont children.
Proponents said the new revenue generated by the bill would be invested in drug treatment programs. They
